Leaving on good terms

Thursday, my boss came looking for me. Finally, finally he got a hold of boss in SJ. Apparently there is this opportunity in Hungary. It will be a temporarily 4 months contract. We are not sure of the details because a lot is still in the works right now.

He asked me what I thought. I was honest. These contracts take a long time. It took us 5 months last time to get on a project. If this is the case, they would be paying me 5 months of doing nothing to get on a contract that only lasts 4 months. Also, it is not a definite thing that I would get the contract. Because of the wait, the fact it’s temporary, and the traveling, I’m not particularly interested.

He also knows from previous conversations that I wanted to do something different/more than what I was doing. He was very nice and said he supports me in my decision. There is however, most likely no position for me to come back to locally.

I said I understood. Then I brought up that maybe then it is time for me to move on. He agreed. Translation for my readers: lay off.

He asked my preference on time. I was flexible since I know he needs to work with HR. It will be soon though. Probably next week before I leave of Nova Scotia or right after I get back.

I’m relieved. I knew this was coming. I was frustrated at times because of the uncertainty. However, I think my local boss did everything he could, and was reasonable and straightforward. I think on both sides it was a good time to leave. Things would be strained if I try to hang on. If they didn’t let me go and I don’t have meaningful work I’d get discouraged.

I will miss the people here though. We had been like a little family. It’s going to be hard getting a job and integrating into an new team. Although, I am also a little thrilled at the possibilities!
