The one that always pick up the bill

I have this friend. We have known each other a long time. However, we lost contact because I was traveling around. A couple of years ago we found ourselves in the same city and reconnected.. We see each other maybe once a month and when it comes to busy time in his industry even less than that. Every time we go out he insists on paying. Granted that he makes way more than me, but I can afford to pay my share too.

I try to pay for things whenever I can. Like if we were seeing a movie and I get there first I try to buy both our tickets. But I feel it's really uneven in terms of what we spend.

If we were dating, I think I'd be ok with it. But this makes me feel kind of guilty. Should I? Another thing is, I don't remember him always picking up the bill when we knew each other before (before we finished school and he got his awesome job). So maybe he does feel like treating because he can? I don't know.

I'd continue offering and try to force a payment (for the both of you)

But it really just sounds like he wants to treat you, even as a friend because it makes him feel good.

Think about it. If it was a girl would you feel the same?

I kind of do that to my friends too.. so...

Maybe he's got a crush on you?

Or he might just be wonderful. There are some guys out there who insist on paying even if they're not romantically interested in you.

I have a friend like that and I try to pay as often as I can, but don't sweat it too much when he picks up the tab. It clearly means something to him to do it.

Some people are just generous. It sounds like he enjoys treating you. The fact that you make offers to pay and do things like purchase tickets shows that you recognize the generosity which I'm sure is thanks enough. To him maybe its a small cost to share time with a great woman like you.

Thanks girls. It helps to have your objective views on this. I think I will continue to try and pay as much as I can. However, I don't want to be too insistent because in my experience sometimes it hurts the friendship. Like we aren't friends enough for me to accept a dinner.

I agree with Dolly Iris.
And honestly, I think some men just like to treat women. It doesn't have to have anything to do with hoping to develop something more than a friendship. I just think men often like to make women feel special. And hey, what's wrong with that?
