Ordering lunches

Last week this company we work with took our team out for Christmas lunch at a posh restaurant in town. I ordered a very delicious rack of lamb, and no alcohol. The no alcohol is a personal choice since during these holiday lunches, our bosses are ok with a couple of drinks.

When our food came, most noticeable was the lobster and steak order. Gathering from comments from one of our bosses, I detected a little disapproval. I guess there is fine line between taking advantage of 'sponsored' lunches and going overboard. What do you think?

My rule is to order something special (something I wouldn't get myself or couldn't make myself) but nothing that will make me stand out (like lobster, or things market priced etc)

Edit: I think steak by itself is totally fine or maybe even lobster on its own. But ordering steak AND lobster (one of the most expensive things on the menu) was what drew people's attention.

I agree with the lobster, but steak? Really? STEAK?

Mmm.. steak. Now I want one.

I do agree with not going overboard with sponsored lunches but.. maybe they haven't had lobster all year? I dunno. I'd order something reasonable by looking at the range of prices and picking the middle.

I agree with the lobster, but not so much with the steak unless the price was out of control.

But with this kind of environment, people should have been more sensitive because it reflects badly on them. I would've looked at the range of prices and picked a mid priced meal.

I'm glad you enjoy my blog :) Thanks.

Steak on its own is fine. We had quite a few people order steak. It's the combination of steak AND lobster that was a little much.

I always order something mid priced on the menu at sponsored lunchesc, and as far as apps, drinks, etc. I take my cue from others.

I would pick something in the mid price range too... would not want to stand out with my coworkers and bosses...

(BTW, "Susan" is advertising her site. I have seen similar comments left on many blogs... same weblink, different person posting it... the message is always the same though)

I agree with other comments. I think a steak is acceptable alone, but not paired with lobster. I also tend to go for mid price ranged items when at work functions. I also listen to hear what others are ordering.
At BF's staff dinner this year I took note of what the boss and his wife were ordering. I heard everyone talk about appetizers so I ordered one and then I kept my entree around the same price point as everyone else.
